Natto is an interesting food that is unique to Japan. It is fermented soybeans. Soybeans are let to ferment in a special procedure which has the soybeans encased in a tube made from straw. This allows the beans to ferment. Natto has a very distinct smell and flavour. Many Japanese as well as foreigners don't like it. It takes some courage the first try as it looks very unappetising and has a bad smell. But once you get used to it it is very good. It is often eaten as breakfast in Japan and is very healthy.
